That evening, I pulled on a pair of jeans that fit the curves of my hips without an inch of fabric to spare. I chose my favorite shirt, with a v-cut and black sequins that reminded me of a blouse my mother wore. I waited on the walkway outside of my apartment, starting at five-forty-five. Jacob would be early.

He pulled into the parking lot a few minutes before six. Jacob stepped down from the truck and glanced to where I stood. No need to invite him inside. Hopefully, the night would end with him here.

My insides tingled. Was I finally ready to take this gigantic step and invite a guy back for the night? Tracy would talk me up if she were here. Good thing she wasn’t. She’d insist on meeting Jacob, and I definitely wasn’t ready for that step.

Jacob looked handsome in a pair of black jeans and a blue and white polo shirt. Was this perfect man really here to take me out? His hair glistened in the light from the setting sun, and his smile sparkled. I wanted to run my hands through that hair like I had in the freezer, but I climbed into the truck. Inside, the teasing hint of cologne made me wish the truck had a bench seat so we could sit closer.

“You look sexy,” he said.

“That’s a good way to start the evening. Maybe you’ll want to kiss me again like you did in the freezer.”

He chuckled. “Nothing could keep me from wanting to kiss you.”

Those moments our lips touched in the frigid air were all I could think about as he drove to the rows of restaurants and shops near the river walk. Jacob’s attention stayed focused on the road, but I silently willed him to glance my way. I thought of his blue eyes and the way he’d stared down at me. I’d run my hands through his dark hair, the thickest hair I’d ever felt. The thought of kissing Jacob again made me grin.

“What are you thinking?” he asked.

With flaming cheeks, I turned toward my window. Would he see through me and know I’d been kissed only a few times in my life?

Jacob didn’t speak again until after we pulled into the parking behind an old row of shops. I marveled as he maneuvered the truck into a space that looked as if it barely fit a car. He helped me out of the truck and led me to the entrance of a cozy Italian restaurant I’d never heard of.

In two years, I’d never noticed the sign. “How long have you lived in Dawson?”

“Not long,” he said as he opened the door for me.

The room was dimly lit and smelled of bread pudding, like my mother used to make.

“Jacob,” the host said with a smile. “It’s been a long time.”

“Too long,” Jacob said.

The middle-aged man turned to me. “How did you get him out for the night?”

“He asked me to dinner.” I shot Jacob a glance, and he only smiled.
